1. When did you qualify as a chartered surveyor?
I qualified in 2003 following a 3-year correspondence course at Reading University and a further 2 years of post-qualification practical experience.
2. What attracted you to the profession?
Following 10 years in residential and commercial estate agency, I decided on a change of direction. However, I still wanted to be involved with property and surveying seemed like the natural progression.
3. What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the daily demands and challenges of surveying. The job is varied, no two properties are the same, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great British weather !
4. How long have you worked for the Spicerhaart group?
I’ve worked for the Spicerhaart group since 2004.
5. Reveal something interesting about yourself
I’ve been an Ipswich Town supporter all my life and a season ticket holder for many years.
My favourite foods include curry and chocolate cake – although not together!
6. What’s the most unusual property you’ve inspected?
I’ve valued a number of derelict Grade II Listed Suffolk Barns over the years, which are interesting rather than unusual.
It’s pleasing to see these neglected buildings being brought back into economic use again.
7. What advice would you give to someone buying a property?
Purchasing a new house is an exciting time, but you should resist the temptation to buy on impulse.
View a selection of houses and preferably see them more than once and at different times of the day. Research the area and available amenities, as you’ll probably be living there for several years. Buying a house is a major investment, so commission an independent survey to identify any defects and future repair costs.
8. Why do you think it’s important for a mortgage lender to instruct an inspection?
In these times of seemingly endless technological advances, we’re now seeing the evolution of automated valuation models (AVMs). However, in my opinion, there’s still no substitute for a proper mortgage valuation report prepared by a competent professional.
