During the summer, we tend to enjoy our gardens and the sunshine but we overlook the needs of our house and preparing it for the seasons.

When Spring arrives each year, we cut the grass, cut back plants, paint fences and look forward to enjoying the fruits of our labours during the summer months, however, we also need to continue to look after our houses before the darker nights drawback in again.

As part of regular checks, gutters need to be cleared to prevent any blockage which could in turn lead to water overflowing and damaging roofs/brickwork.

Any faulting windows or doors need to be replaced or secured to prevent any break-ins in addition to securing any drafts around the windows or doors. During the winter months, windows usually remain shut, but when you open them in the spring/summer months, these could have locked in position or the arms have ceased, so you may need to lubricate these or in some circumstances, replace them if they have become brittle.

It is important boilers/fires are serviced on an annual basis and rather than wait until you start to use them more, why not service them in the summer months when they are not in use, you may find plumbers are easier to find and may also offer a discount as they are quieter during the summer season.

It is advisable to have a carbon monoxide monitor in your home as well as fire alarms, but how often do you test these?  These could save your life, so a test each week/fortnight is suggested.

When you buy a home, it is vital to complete ongoing maintenance checks in the same manner as you would service your car.  Your car transports you from A to B, whilst your home is your castle, providing you with warmth and safety.
